Things to do before troubleshooting
1. Make a backup of the data file
Our recommendation is to make a Quicken File backup before taking any troubleshooting steps because if there was a fall back in between the process, you can go back to the same place where you started. To create a backup:
- Quicken open
- Go to Backup & Restore> Back up Quicken File …
- Now click on back up
2. update to the latest version
- Quicken open
- Go to help> check for updates
- If an update is available to install, click Yes to launch it.

Method 1: Refresh Online Account Information
- Click Account (on the left)
- Once you open the account register, click the gear icon at the top right with the drop-down menu
- Then click on Update Now (Ctrl + Alt + U)
- The next screen prompts you to enter a password for secure or bank
- Then click on update now
Method 2: Wait 24–48 business hours
After trying Method 1, please wait at least 24-48 business hours. It may take some time to implement the changes on the bank’s server or website. You can try to update the account after 24-48 hours. If the same problem occurs again, try the methods given above.

Method 3: Contact your bank / financial institution
If you have waited more than 24 hours and are trying to update the accounts and still receive the same error message, please contact your bank / financial institution. They can help you down the road.

Method 4: deactivate and reactivate the account
Deactivate Account
- Go to Tools> List of Accounts (Ctrl + A)
- Now you can click on Edit on the account which is the cause of this problem.
- Select the Online Services tab
- Then click on Disable
- Now click on Yes to confirm
- Then click on OK and Done
Reactivate account
- Go to Tools> Add an Account.
- Then select the type of account like a check, saving, etc.
- Now click on Advanced Setup (in the lower-left corner)
- Now write the name of your bank / financial institution
- Then click on Next
- Select an appropriate connection method and click Next
- Now enter the user name and password of the bank
- Then click connect
- Now Quicken starts searching for your bank accounts
- Once you can see the list of your accounts, it is time to reactivate the account
- Instead of reconnecting the accounts, you’ll need to link it to an existing account in Quicken (see an image below)
- Then click on Next and Finish
